United Way to Offer Free Tax Filing in Burkburnett with help from AmeriCorps

Wichita Falls, TX (January 11, 2010) - The North Texas Area United Way Will offer free tax preparation and filing in the City of Burkburnett during the month of February. The Filing site will be at Citibank located at 317 E. 3 rd. Street and will be held on Tuesdays beginning February 2 nd from 9:00 am until 3:00 in the afternoon. Residents with an income of less than $49,000 are asked to dial toll free 2-1-1 or 940-761-3802 to schedule their free appointment.

“We are very proud to offer this program. We have been able to help many families and will be able to expand our operation to serve an even greater population.” said Diana Phillips, President and CEO of the United Way.

The United Way will work closely with a group of thirteen men and women who are a part of AmeriCorps’ National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). The organization is a full time national service program that provides young adults ages 18-24 the opportunity to participate in community based service projects in exchange for financial assistance for education or to pay back existing student loans.

The team will have a number of roles while they are here. Initially they will become certified by the IRS and then will begin providing outreach, letting the community know about the free tax program. Once the program begins in February, they will also be preparing and filing taxes.

The men and women will stay at the training facility for the Burkburnett Black Sox until they depart for their next assignment on March 5 th.

“These young men and women are a long way from home and we are going to do everything we can to make them feel welcome here in North Texas.” Phillips said.
