Champion the Cause for Education

At North Texas Area United Way, our goal is to advance the common good through the promotion of quality education, stable income, and good health for everyone. In education this means helping children and youth achieve their potential, from birth through high school graduation.

Every 26 seconds a student drops out of high school, with this educational crisis disproportionately affecting minority and low-income students. The North Texas Area United Way is committed to improving educational opportunities for all students, regardless of ethnicity, disability, income, or geography. United Way realizes the importance of quality along the continuum of education and will advocate for policies aimed at increasing student achievement from early childhood education and school-readiness, to high school completion, college readiness, and workforce development.

Pre-K Day at the Texas Capitol

United Ways across Texas joined with Texas Early Childhood Education Coalition (TECEC), the organizer of Pre-K Lobby Day, to storm the state capitol in Austin, TX on Tuesday, February 17th to advocate on behalf of early childhood learning.

Championed by United Way Women's Leadership Councils and co-hosted by United Ways of Texas and United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, advocates called upon Texas lawmakers to support early childhood education by expanding Pre-Kindergarten programs for the youngest and most vulnerable Texans.

During Texas' 81st Legislative Session, Texas United Ways will be pushing for the passage of Senate Bill 21 and House Bill 130, which, upon passage, would give school districts the option of expanding their Pre-K programs to a full day, reduce class sizes by increasing the number of classes, and require that school districts form partnerships with Head Start programs and/or community child care centers to deliver quality Pre-K programs.  Together with TECEC, United Ways of Texas has worked tirelessly to gain bipartisan support for this legislation.

Attendees heard remarks from key lawmakers, including Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.  Additionally, the Texas Senate passes a resolution honoring the work of these women during February 17th's legislative session.

Congratulations to United Ways of Texas and the following local United Ways for their participation in this amazing display of advocacy in action!  Please click on the name of the local United Way for more information on how each organization is LIVING UNITED in their local communities!
