Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax filing program.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers will help prepare and file basic federal income tax returns for eligible working individuals and families with incomes of less than $49,000 annually. No previous accounting or tax experience is needed to volunteer, but all volunteers must receive free training and certification in basic tax preparation and use the TaxWise software. Volunteers may also opt for training in intermediate and advanced tax return preparation. Once certified, volunteers will be assigned to VITA sites throughout North Texas.
n 2010, over 65 United Way volunteers dedicated more than 2500 hours to the VITA free tax filing program. Volunteers prepared 1577 tax returns bringing over $2.4 Million in refunds back to our community and hardworking families and individuals, including $532,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits, and saved clients an estimated $162,000 in tax preparation fees. 

Who says volunteers don't make a difference!

Volunteers have the option of online self-paced training, instructor-based training or a combination of the two. Instructor-based training will consist of 8-10 hours. Training and certification must be completed by January 18. The VITA sites open January 29, 2011 and most will be open through April 14, 2011. A minimum of 16 volunteer hours during the tax season is preferred. If you are interested in more detailed information please request a volunteer recruitment packet from United Way.
