Position Title:            Early Childhood Education Coach

Dept/Prog:                Early Childhood Education/School Readiness

Reports to:                Director of School Readiness, North Texas Area United Way

Exempt Status:               Exempt

 

Job Summary:  The Early Childhood Education Coach is a grant funded position that will provide mentoring service to early childhood education staff in selected childcare centers in two at risk target neighborhoods. The coach will help address issues associated with developmentally appropriate early childhood practices, classroom management, curriculum implementation, and implementation of early childhood education standards. The ECE coach will train and model appropriate teaching strategies and give guidance regarding classroom and time management, discipline, scheduling, planning, arranging the physical environment, and organizing the day. The coach will also assist in the development and implementation of a quality improvement plan and will monitor progress of childcare centers on progress related to quality improvement plan. The ECE coach will attend North Texas Area United Way Early Childhood Education Impact team meetings and will submit monthly reports to the direct supervisor.

Qualifications

I.    Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, child development, or a closely related field

II.   Experience:

  • Three years experience in a preschool/early childhood education classroom

III.  Other Experience preferred

  • Excellent communications skills
  • Speaks/understands Spanish
  • Experience with non-profits preferred
  • Experience with best practices and research for children birth-five
  • Experience in a child care setting preferred
  • Experience with state early childhood education standards and NAEYC accreditation
  • Experience serving as mentor in education setting
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate interactions for children birth to age 5
  • Experience in public speaking
  • Experience in event coordination and leading professional development
  • Experience in strategic planning and program development
  • Experience working with or serving on boards
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience working with low income families and children

IV.  Major Responsibilities:

  • Actively participates in activities designed to achieve the North Texas Area United Way’s mission and to improve child performance
  • Works as a team member demonstrating flexibility, assisting other programs’/departments’/agencies’ staff members, and lending support to other staff
  • Accepts responsibility for personal professional growth and review of current professional literature.
  • Functions within the policies and administrative procedures of NTAUW
  • Performs duties as assigned to ensure the effective operation and accomplishment of the United Way mission
  • Ensures that the quality (neat, accurate, and thorough) and quantity (amount of work during a given amount of time) of work meets expectations necessary to fulfill the United Way mission
  • Demonstrates dependability and drive in completing work assignment without close supervision
  • Commits to high attendance and exhibits punctuality
  • Is knowledgeable about the Early Development Instrument and its function in the program
  • Supports the independent assessor in administers the ITERS/ECERS environmental rating scan to assess current level of quality of early childhood education centers
  • Uses the results of the ITERS/ECERS to develop a quality improvement plan in partnership with early childhood education center directors
  • Coordinates with School Readiness Program Manager to implement Director Best Practice Exchange for centers
  • Implements the quality improvement plan in each of the childcare centers through mentoring, modeling, and providing individualized support for center staff
  • Works within the childcare centers providing coaching and mentoring up to 15 hours per week, depending on the needs presented in the quality improvement plan.
  • Implements classroom modeling techniques to correspond with off-site professional development
  • Informs the community and United Way of barriers to increasing quality of early childhood education and recommendations to overcome barriers
  • Is an advocate for early childhood
  • Serves as a supervisor for community child care staff who are working toward a CDA (Child Development Associate certificate)
  • Conducts observations as part of the CDA process and submits paperwork to certifying entities
  • Provides consistent and high-level customer service to childcare centers and the community
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality regarding the coaching activities and is always cognizant of this when speaking to others in the community
  • Attends monthly Community Cafes in target neighborhoods

  • Computer, distance learning technology, and other office/training equipment as required

VI.    Working Conditions:

  • Mental Demands
    • Ability to work without close supervision and exercise professional competency, discipline, and integrity; maintain flexibility to manage multiple tasks while meeting critical timelines.
  • Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
    • Occasional to frequent local and regional travel; occasional out of region travel to receive professional development, and prolonged or irregular hours; light to moderate lifting/carrying of equipment and materials.
  • Hours
    • 207 days per year (full time)
  • Closing Date: February 12, 2012
