FAQ
How is the Women's Leadership Council Structured?
- Leadership givers are women who contribute at least $1,000 to the United Way annually ( or at least $2,000 with a spouse). Leadership givers will be voting members, committee members, and participate in member only events.
- Donations through a workplace payroll deduction should be communicated to the United Way office to ensure recognition as a Women's Leadership Giver.
- Members will nominate a steering committee whose duties will include overseeing the WLC. and representing the women's concerns on issues affectingwomen and children. The Steering Committee will be nominated annually by leadership givers.
- Members will be surveyed yearly to determine what the WLC wants to accomplish.
- All women can be members and be a part of the WLC by giving, advocating, and volunteering.
Do members have a voice in the funding decisions?
Members can impact the funding decisions by:
- Serving on a United Way Community Impact Council - This council of extremely committed volunteers determines critical issues on a community wide level and makes recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors on funding local programs that provide the best solutions.
- Requesting the Women's Leadership Council Steering Committee to bring a specific issue or concern to the Community Impact Council.
- Forming a special taskforce around a specific issue and reporting their conclusion to the Community Impact Council.
Where does the money go?
WLC funds are derived from two sources:
- Increases in current Women's Leadership gifts
- New WLC memberships
WLC funds will be allocated based on the following:
- Issues that have been selected by the WLC
- Initiatives or programs that have been approved through the United Way Community Impact Council process
What is the difference between the Women's Leadership Council and other philanthropic organizatons?
- The WLC works within the framework of the United Way organizationwhich includes the work of the Community Impact Council. In this way the WLC furthers the United Way mission: to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of the community.
- Other phianthropic organizations focus on giving opportunities through donor advised funds or general fundraising, but do not include:
- Assessing community issues through research and study.
- Addressing issuesat a community level with many community partners.
- Mobilizing resources beyond dollars to address issues that are too great for one organization alone.

Message from the Chair
"In 2007, 7 women made a leadership commitment to help make real and lasting changes in our community. Two years later, 63 distinguished women have joined the WLC as guardians of our community.
The WLC focus goes beyond raising funds. We're raising hopes, creating opportunities and changing lives. The WLC has the power to generate change, to transform the tomorrows of those in need."
